Discernment?
As Matthew rounds out a section where Jesus has been dealing with significant opposition, he reminds his readers of three dangers the followers of Jesus face. There is the danger of ‘more’, and that is encapsulated in the demand of the religious leaders. It is not a new demand, nor is Jesus’ response much different to his response in Matthew 12:39ff. But these leaders want more than Jesus – and that is just foolish! There is the danger of the ‘mundane’, and that is encapsulated in the reasoning of the disciples. They get so caught up on their bread ‘problem’ that they fail to grasp the sufficiency of Jesus. There is the danger of the ‘message’, and that is encapsulated in Jesus’ warning to the disciples. Don’t be caught up in any ‘message’ that takes you away from Jesus – he is enough!
