Restoration Promised
Today in our final Advent passage, the scene is bittersweet. Matthew recalls the horrific events of the killing of all the boys two and under in and around Bethlehem. As Herod rages against God and his newborn King, Matthew takes us back to the hope of Jeremiah 31. In amongst the suffering of a fallen world, God promises hope: hope for restoration and return after the exile. Matthew links these two events, and reveals that Jesus fulfils what Jeremiah was pointing to. In Jesus, restoration has begun and the decisive victory against sin and death was accomplished on the cross. But while we remain in this Advent period, in the waiting until Christ comes again, Jesus displays the pattern to which his people must follow. “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you” Jer 31:3
