Where else have we to go?
Today’s verses are written in the context of standing firm as God’s mob in the midst of a world that will persecute, and false teachers that will deceive. It is a remarkably modern context! In this environment, what should God’s mob hold onto? What have God’s mob always held onto? What has God given them—to grow in their understanding, to live steadfast lives reflecting God to the world, to discern deceptive and false teaching, to grow in godliness? It is as simple as this: God has given them his ‘breathed-out’ word—the word that reveals his very nature and so is ‘beneficial’ for everything that God’s people need!
