Who is Jesus?
At the heart of Jesus’ identity is his ‘sonship’ - it is there in the opening verse of Matthew’s good news biography, it is there in the nature of the genealogy that follows, it is there in the birth narratives, it is there at his baptism, it is there in the temptation by the devil in the wilderness, it is there as the crowds start to piece together who he might be… and Jesus’ ‘sonship’ is inseparable from his power and his exercise of power. It lies at the heart of his identity and rule. These events display both his ‘sonship’ and the way in which the Son of God will exercise his power.
