Matthew 19:13-30
Jesus' summary of the situation in front of him is rightly famous - who cannot comprehend a camel, an eye of a needle and the conundrum of the former through the latter! And it is that simple - although I think that although Jesus rightly targets the materialistic, he is just as rightly targeting all those who remain independent in their stance in life. Such independence is like a camel trying to pass through the eye of a needle, when it comes to the kingdom of heaven.

The disciples are rightly appalled - if this is the truth (and it is!), then the kingdom of heaven will be frightfully empty!

Jesus' assertion, his assurance, that such dependence is only possible at the hand of God is rightly comforting - after all, the main thrust of Matthew is that only God, through Jesus, can bring the outsider in. But it is also confronting - what might God need to do to us to bring us to dependence upon Jesus, and on him alone?

Prayer:
father, thank you for the comfort of your sufficiency. Prepare me for confronting your sufficiency, so that I depend on Jesus alone. Amen.
