Matthew 20:1-19
The vineyard owner keeps hiring right throughout the day - at noon and then three. Finally, at five in the afternoon, he hires some more, the last.

It is striking that this interchange is in the present tense - verses 6 and 7 - in the Greek. Why? Is there an invitation, like in Matthew 19:18 and 20, to stand with the people mentioned, and ponder the same questions?

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your word that invites us in, questions us, and changes us. Amen.

Some words worth pondering...

From: 'Dark Clouds, deep mercy: discovering the grace of lament' (Mark Vroegop (Crossway: 2019))

'... lament is rooted in what we believe. It is a prayer loaded with theology ... lament stands in the gap between pain and promise. To cry is human, but to lament is Christian.' (p.26)

'Lament is a prayer in pain that leads to trust.' (p.28)
