13 Sep 2020 – Colossians 3:12-17

Put on …!

Prepare for the Word

How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path of sinners, or join a group of mockers!
2 Instead, his delight is in the LORD’s instruction,
and he meditates on it day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of water
that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
4 The wicked are not like this;
instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not survive the judgment,
and sinners will not be in the community of the righteous.
6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
Psalm 1:1-6

Sing God’s Word

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not,
as thou hast been thou ever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness,
great is thy faithfulness;
morning by morning
new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided –
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

Summer and winter, and spring-time and harvest,
sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin, and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Pray the Word (i)

11 For the grace of God has appeared, with salvation for all people,  12 instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age,  13 while we wait for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.  14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a special people, eager to do good works.
Titus 2:11-14

Merciful Father,
we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the desires and schemes of our own hearts,
and have broken your holy laws.
We have left undone what we ought to have done,
and we have done what we ought not to have done.
Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;
restore those who repent,
according to the promises declared to us
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Grant, merciful Father, for his sake,
that from now on,
we may live godly and obedient lives,
to the glory of your holy name.

Assurance and Thanksgiving

13 And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive with Him and forgave us all our trespasses.  14 He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the cross.
Colossians 2:13-14

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His steadfast love endures forever!

Sing the Word

In Christ alone my hope is found:
he is my light, my strength, my song.
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled when strivings cease:
my Comforter, my all in all:
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh:
fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
scorned by the ones he came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died
the wrath of God was satisfied,
for every sin on him was laid:
here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground his body lay:
light of the world by darkness slain.
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
up from the grave he rose again.
And as he stands in victory,
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
for I am his and he is mine,
bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death:
this is the power of Christ in me.
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
can ever pluck me from his hand,
till he returns or calls me home:
here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

All readings are from the Christian Standard Bible

My soul, praise the LORD,
and all that is within me, praise His holy name.
2 My soul, praise the LORD,
and do not forget all His benefits.
3 He forgives all your sin;
He heals all your diseases.
4 He redeems your life from the Pit;
He crowns you with faithful love and compassion.
5 He satisfies you with goodness;
your youth is renewed like the eagle.
6 The LORD executes acts of righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.
7 He revealed His ways to Moses,
His deeds to the people of Israel.
8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger and full of faithful love.
9 He will not always accuse us or be angry forever.
10 He has not dealt with us as our sins deserve
or repaid us according to our offenses.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His faithful love toward those who fear Him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
14 For He knows what we are made of,
remembering that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are like grass—
he blooms like a flower of the field;
16 when the wind passes over it, it vanishes,
and its place is no longer known.
17 But from eternity to eternity the LORD’s faithful love is toward those who fear Him,
and His righteousness toward the grandchildren
18 of those who keep His covenant,
who remember to observe His instructions.
19 The LORD has established His throne in heaven,
and His kingdom rules over all.
20 Praise the LORD, all His angels of great strength,
who do His word, obedient to His command.
21 Praise the LORD, all His armies,
His servants who do His will.
22 Praise the LORD, all His works in all the places where He rules.
My soul, praise the LORD!
Psalm 103:1-22

So rid yourselves of all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.  2 Like newborn infants, desire the unadulterated spiritual milk, so that you may grow by it in your salvation,  3 since you have tasted that the Lord is good.  4 Coming to Him, a living stone– rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God–  5 you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  6 For it stands in Scripture: Look! I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and valuable cornerstone, and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame!  7 So the honor is for you who believe; but for the unbelieving, The stone that the builders rejected– this One has become the cornerstone, and  8 A stone that causes men to stumble, and a rock that trips them up. They stumble by disobeying the message; they were destined for this.  9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.  10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:1-10

12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,  13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also you must forgive14 Above all, put on love– the perfect bond of unity.  15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful.  16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God.  17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil;
for the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours,
now and forever.

General prayer…

Be exalted, Lord, above the heavens.
Let your glory cover the earth.
Keep our nation under your care.
And guide us in justice and truth.
Let your way be known on earth.
Your saving power among all nations.
Send out your light and truth.
That we may tell of your saving works.
Hear our prayers, O Lord.
For we put our trust in you.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven.
He is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Sing the Word

Image of invisible God,
everything created by him:
he is before all things
and by him all things hold together.

There is one firstborn over creation!
There is one who died for sin!
There is one who is head of the body:
Jesus Christ the risen king!

God in all his fullness was
pleased to dwell in him and through him
reconcile all things to himself,
things on earth and things in heaven.

Through his blood shed on the cross
he made peace to present us
without blemish and holy,
sanctified before the Father

Chorus x2

So, stand firm, do not sway from the hope of
Jesus Christ the risen king!
