Prepare for the Word

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
a people for His possession,
so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
10 Once we were not a people, but now we are God’s people;
we had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:9-10

Sing God’s Word

The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is his new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth;
her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

We see her long divided by heresy and sect;
yet she by God is guided, one people, one elect:
her vigil she is keeping, her cry goes up, ‘How long?’
and soon the night of weeping shall be the dawn of song.

In toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation of peace forevermore:
till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed;
at last the church victorious shall be the church at rest!

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One
and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Bible-readings…

All readings are from the Christian Standard Bible

27 “Now if any of the common people sins unintentionally by violating one of the Lord’s commands, does what is prohibited, and incurs guilt, 28 or if someone informs him about the sin he has committed, then he is to bring an unblemished female goat as his offering for the sin that he has committed. 29 He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering. 30 Then the priest is to take some of its blood with his finger and apply it to the horns of the altar of burnt offering. He is to pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. 31 He is to remove all its fat just as the fat is removed from the fellowship sacrifice. The priest is to burn it on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf, and he will be forgiven.
Leviticus 4:27-31

32 “Indeed, ask about the earlier days that preceded you, from the day God created mankind on the earth and from one end of the heavens to the other: Has anything like this great event ever happened, or has anything like it been heard of? 33 Has a people heard God’s voice speaking from the fire as you have, and lived? 34 Or has a god attempted to go and take a nation as his own out of another nation, by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, by great terrors, as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You were shown these things so that you would know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. 36 He let you hear his voice from heaven to instruct you. He showed you his great fire on earth, and you heard his words from the fire. 37 Because he loved your ancestors, he chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by his presence and great power, 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you in and give you their land as an inheritance, as is now taking place. 39 Today, recognise and keep in mind that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other.
Deuteronomy 4:32-39

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
16 For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through him and for him.
17 He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.
18 He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.
19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
21 Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds as expressed in your evil actions. 22 But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before him— 23 if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a servant of it.
Colossians 1:15-23

Affirm the Word

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven.
He is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Sermon

1. Intro

2. Your King is able…
   because of who he is

3. Your King is able…
   to redeem you from darkness

4. Your King is able…
   to redeem you to God

5. Your King is able…
   so continue in Him

Sing the Word

He walked on earth,
showing glimpses of heaven.
Demons, death, disease had no hand.
The wind and the waves
were obedient before him.
Well may they say, “Who is this man”?

Chorus:
Behold the Lamb of God
who takes away our sin:
the light of the world, the Son of God.
Worthy is the Lamb,
to receive our praise,
glory and honour and power.

He turned not his face
from our pain and destruction.
He drank the bitter cup to the end.
He who knew no sin
took the punishment for us,
deserted by God, man and friend.

Chorus

On the third day,
he was raised up with glory,
reigning on high, the risen Son.
Now we have life,
a new hope, a new future,
now we cry, ‘Come, Lord Jesus, come!’

Pray the Word

Confession

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins  2 in which you previously walked according to this worldly age, according to the ruler of the atmospheric domain, the spirit now working in the disobedient.  3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and by nature we were children under wrath, as the others were also.
Ephesians 2:1-3

Knowing that we continue to struggle with sin, as we are remade by God through the work of the Holy Spirit, let’s turn to him as his people, asking for forgiveness…

Our lips are ready to confess,
But our hearts are slow to feel,
and our wills are reluctant to repent.
We bring our entire selves to you, this morning—
bend us, wound us, and, if necessary break us.
We have seen the purity of your perfect word,
the happiness of those in whose heart it reigns,
the calm dignity of the walk to which it calls—
yet we daily violate its precepts.
Your loving Spirit strives within us,
brings us Scripture warnings,
speaks in startling providences,
allures by secret whispers—
yet we make shameful choices that grieve him and quench his influence.
We mourn and lament these sins, crying to you for pardon.
Grant that through the tears of repentance we may see more clearly the goodness and glory of our Saviour and his cross.
Amen

Assurance and thanksgiving

4 But God, who is abundant in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us,  5 made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. By grace you are saved!  6 He also raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavens, in Christ Jesus,  7 so that in the coming ages He might display the immeasurable riches of His grace in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.  8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift–  9 not from works, so that no one can boast.  10 For we are His creation– created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:4-10

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil;
for the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours,
now and forever.
Amen.

General prayer… (using Psalm 19)

Give thanks to God for what he has made and how it wordlessly displays his divine power and eternal majesty

Intercede for this broken world, at this time – for those suffering under the pandemic, for those entrusted with decision-making, for us as God’s people to display his likeness.

Give thanks that God is by nature a speaking God, and that his word is the source of life, judgement and salvation.

Ask that we are the people of God’s word, that we sink our roots deeply into it, that we know him through it so that we fear him rightly.

Give thanks that our sin is exposed, revealed, and that we come to know our true self through God’s word.

Confess that we must turn to God as the one who can forgive our sins, through Jesus as Lord and Saviour who transfers us into his kingdom, and that we are transformed by the Spirit applying God’s word to our whole being.

Give thanks that God has equipped us to represent him, and his Son, in this world.

Ask that through us, God will bring many to know Jesus, and that we will seek to place the good news of Jesus – that he is the one able to deal with our brokenness – in front of people in our families and town.

Sing the Word

We won’t fear the battle,
we won’t fear the night.
We will walk the valley with you by our side.
You will go before us,
you will lead the way.
We have found a refuge – only you can save.

Chorus:
Sing with joy now: our God is for us.
The Father’s love is a strong and mighty fortress.
Raise your voice now, no love is greater!
Who can stand against us if our God is for us?

Even when I stumble,
even when I fall,
even when I turn back, still your love is sure.
You will not abandon,
you will not forsake,
you will cheer me onward with never-ending grace.

Chorus

Bridge:
Neither height nor depth can separate us.
Hell and death will not defeat us.
He who gave his Son to free us
holds me in his love.

Go out in the Word

11 Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you.  12 Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do evil, they may, by observing your good works, glorify God in a day of visitation.
