Facts... and alternative facts | Bernard Gabbott | Sunday, 17 April 2022 | Kids Talk | Watch | Listen |
On the one hand, Jesus’ resurrection is the crux (and no pun intended) of the Gospel. If Jesus is not raised from the dead, His claims are mocked, His life is no different to our life, and the forgiveness of sins is a myth. If Jesus is not raised from the dead, then we are to be pitied! But the resurrection of Jesus is real – it is just as God planned, just as Jesus shared, and witnessed to by more than 500 people (many of whom could be contacted when 1 Corinthians was written!) So, on the other hand, Jesus is raised from the dead – and this means the offer of the Gospel is true, that the future is assured through Jesus, and that physical life matters – now and then.
Many people see the death of Jesus as a failure. But nothing could be further from the truth. As Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, He shows us why His death is important and what true power looks like. He shows us that it is His death that fixes our broken relationship with God and enables us to be called His children. He also shows that true power is found only in sacrificial service of others as He calls us to follow His example in our lives.
Certainty is hard to come by these days. More and more people are losing trust in the institutions and ideas that we used to be certain of. But God has given us more than enough reason to be certain of what he has done for us. The plan he enacted at the beginning of time has been fulfilled, his people have faithfully transmitted his message across the ages, and we have his Holy Spirit as a deposit of what is to come. If nothing else we can always be certain that Jesus really was God with us and our sins are certainly paid for by his death. No matter what happens we can always be sure of what God has done for us in his Son.
